Volunteer with CEA in Akumal Turtle Camps Coral Restoration and Marine Monitoring

Akumal has long attracted travelers who care deeply about the ocean. For marine biology students, environmentalists, and travelers seeking purpose-driven experiences, the volunteer programs offered by the Centro Ecológico Akumal (CEA) provide a rare opportunity to contribute directly to marine conservation while living beside one of the Riviera Maya’s most important coastal ecosystems.

CEA has protected Akumal’s marine environment for decades through research, education, and conservation programs. Their volunteer initiatives allow participants to work alongside scientists and conservation staff while gaining practical field experience.

These programs welcome students, researchers, and environmentally conscious travelers who want more than a traditional vacation.

Campamento Tortuguero Sea Turtle Conservation Camp

The Sea Turtle Protection Program focuses on protecting, conserving, and researching nesting sea turtles in Akumal along with their nests and hatchlings.

Volunteers help monitor nesting beaches during the season while learning scientific protocols used in marine conservation.

During the first two to three days, participants receive training in monitoring methods, species identification, and conservation protocols through both classroom instruction and fieldwork. Training continues throughout the program and volunteers always work under the supervision of camp staff.

Participants receive their activity calendar upon arrival.

The program operates six days per week with one rest day.

Night monitoring shifts take place during the peak nesting hours:

21:00 to 01:00
00:00 to 04:00

Program donation:

2 weeks – 4,800 MXN
3 weeks – 7,200 MXN
4 weeks – 9,400 MXN

Juvenile Sea Turtle Monitoring

This program studies juvenile sea turtles living in the bays of Akumal and their interaction with the surrounding environment.
